hard drive died

hp zd7160us
Hey,
I pulled the hard drive to get all the information to purchase a replacement.
I called the local library - too long a wait to get seat to use a computer.
So, Knoppix DVD 5.1.1 in the CD drive - boot - and kppp'ed to the Internet.
Found a reseller - ordered the hard drive - running from CD and 512k memory.
I ran all week with no installed hard drive. I bought a 2Gb cruzer formatted
the fat32, knoppixed the persistent home directory /dev/sda1 (usb) type at
boot knoppix home=scan and everything saved from last session load for next.
Email arrived, Internet worked - I'm still looking for the right linux for this
HP! I tried this - with out the hard drive - and it worked with kubuntu as well.
I did not know how to set this up as persistent for kubuntu. I have read that a
usb is bootable on some systems - not with this Hp Pavillion - I'm a newbe!

The first part is a "how to keep using the computer after the hard drive is removed" - from the Laptop (or) Desktop.
The middle part is how to add a usb scan disk (or) you can use a floppy and save the configuration manual each time.
The usb floppy amount you can save is limited and the reason I purchased a 2Gb SDcruzer for 19.99. It was on sale.
The last (2) parts:
Statement_1. How to set set up usb boot - - does not work with this computer model - - or I don't know how to Bio.
Question__2. Hp pavilion zd7160us/100Gb hard drive - digital media slot - wireless - - Someone suggested Mandriva
as a system except I could not connect a printer - - cups could not be found - Internet fine - - B4 I
commit the entire drive I would like to: Know If any one with an IDENTICAL "model Hp" has had success
with all or most of the features - - Which flavor of Linux is the best choice - - Many thanks to you.

Hi Rev

I would try Ubuntu on your HP. I have and IBM t40, so I cant say it will work on your HP.
Ubuntu is widely supported and has a large user base. I tried several distros of linux
before settling on Ubuntu. It was the only one that the wireless worked right out of the box.
After you decide on which linux I also recommend a program that runs under Wine called
E-Sword. Its an excellent bible study program. there are a few hoops to jump through to
get it to run under linux. Email me through my profile and Ill send you the how to's.
