Guide me how to install linux (netbook) on this Selar that runs Windows CE.

Hello all, long time since my last post.

I need some guidance on how to install for example Ubuntu netbook remix on this little netbook by Selar. Here is a link to their page.http://www.selar.eu/selar/

The netbook uses a file with extension .nb0, you can download this here:http://www.repair-service.nl/selar/s...730-QWERTY.zip

This zip file has a tool to burn a SD-card, then you can restore this little netbook. There is also Softmaker Pro, for office tools, like Word, Spreadsheet, etc....

Can anyone show or tell or point out to me how to install Linux netbook, and burn it to the SD card, so I can reprogram this netbook, please?

Many thanks in advance.

Sincerely,

Hector

Just follow steps here:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/In...n/FromUSBStick

I have personally had better experience using Arch Linux on my netbook (Ubuntu Netbook Remix was slow and Moblin Lacked Applications)
However Arch isn't the most GUI friendly distro at first

Hi action_owl, and thanks for your help, I really appreciate it.
You have actually confirmed what I was doing, I have used this, but to no avail. No problem burning the SDcard via USB.

After installing the Ubuntu netbook-remix onto the SDcard, I tried to boot the Selar netbook and I get this message:
"Image is not system SD", and then WinCE boots up normally.

Somehow I think the image has to be in the ".nb0" format.
This is the only way I could get the restoral of WinCE OS.
Do you think perhaps convert iso to nb0?

Thanks.

Hector

Doing some quick googling totally based on the nb0 file fact I would guess this is really an embedded mobile device and not a netbook based on the standard PC. I do not have any experience dealing with trying to load linux on a mobile device but you really need to create a ROM image of the OS so just an ISO is not going to work. I also did not find much information on this device or if anyone has even tried porting a linux OS. At the moment I think trying to run linux is not possible.

Can I ask the country where you purchased this device?

I recall Richard Stallman giving a talk about it being legal in some countries to have Microsoft computers pre-installed with a BIOS that does not allow you to change the operating system without finding a way to work around the BIOS lock out.

The Selar website doesn't give much information on this device and I hope you aren't the victim of this BIOS 'feature'.

Hi and thank you for the update.
That's bad and good news.
The bad news is that "at the moment" I can not run linux on this device.

The good news is: You mentioned to create a ROM image of the OS.
Please elaborate on this, what application can I use.
I would like to add this mobile device as another linux possible...

Thanks again for your response, I appreciate this to the fullest!!

Sincerely,

Hector3rd

Hello action_owl, how's it going?
Thanks for your input.

The device is made in China.
As you can see from the link above, it ends with ".nl", thus Selar is a Dutch company.
Any further ideas are more than welcome, perhaps you can also elaborate on what application I can use to create this ROM file, or "nb0".

As always, very grateful for the time you give me.

Sincerely,

Hector3rd
