Grub error 15

I get this on boot up, then the machine hangs: error 15 right after it says grub.

Any help is appreciated,

1. which distro is this and how was it installed?
2. have you been running this linux for a while and this problem has only just cropped up or is this the first install of this linux.

Have you googled for a list of grub errors?

To be sure, I need to know how you have set up your partitions.
Do you use a seperate boot partition?

In general, error 15 is due to not finding the files needed to boot.

a. Check the root line in grub.conf is correct.
b. reinstall grub with grub-install
c. check the /boot partition filesystem

Check if the filename is correct, and i think grub doesn't work if it's a symlink to other file.

Any hard drive additions/changes lately? I actually saw a grub 15 this weekend when I added a SATA drive to an existing server - turned out my bios was set to boot scsi's before ide's (primary drivers are ide). Just a thought,

Grub error codes

I got this error ( code 15 ) in similar circumstances when I already knew something was wrong, (and also codes 17 and 13 when I did things like disconnecting disks etc.) Is there a simple accessible guide to GRUB online which lists these error codes?

As everybody has said that error is usually given when you make a change on your hard disk configuration. It can be solved either (or both) changing the /boot/grub/menu.lst configuration file and setting some commands on the grub shell (check #man grub) or if your distro has an utility like slackware's grubconfig you can use it to as an easier way fo solving your problem.

also check
http://www.gnu.org/software/grub/manual/grub.html

Hope it helped.

I re-installed ubuntu 6.06 and it went away, also got ndiswrapper to make my wireless work, now need to figure out how to configure the connection to my M$HOME network.

Fun, yeah, that's what we'll call this.
