glxgears stuck at 377fps on an ATI Mobility M6

I'm running Kubuntu on a Gateway 450sx4 laptop with an ATI Mobility M6 graphics chip. It isn't supported by the fglrx drivers, but 3D acceleration does work with DRI.

The problem I'm having is that with 3D acceleration enabled I'm always stuck at 377fps in glxgears. I know my card can do better because I got around 700fps on the same laptop running Mepis. I tested Tux Racer and I get about 75fps @ 640x480. I'm fairly new to Linux so I'm not sure if that's good or not. Is glxgears bugged or not? If not, how can I get better performance?

Edit: I noticed something else as I booted into the Mepis live CD. Whenever I run glxgears in Mepis I get around 600fps now (config is not optimized yet like my HDD install of Mepis) and the line "disabling TCL support" shows up in the terminal right after the glxgears command. I didn't see that in Kubuntu. Also, the gears seem to spin much faster in Kubuntu but I get the lower fps reading.

glxgears:

Code:
1839 frames in 5.0 seconds = 367.800 FPS
1885 frames in 5.0 seconds = 377.000 FPS
1884 frames in 5.0 seconds = 376.800 FPS
1885 frames in 5.0 seconds = 377.000 FPS
1885 frames in 5.0 seconds = 377.000 FPS
1885 frames in 5.0 seconds = 377.000 FPS
1885 frames in 5.0 seconds = 377.000 FPS
1886 frames in 5.0 seconds = 377.200 FPS
1885 frames in 5.0 seconds = 377.000 FPS
1886 frames in 5.0 seconds = 377.200 FPS
