I think what made it work was that he has a SATA hard drive. Using a more recent distro fixed the problem, since RH9 is old, and does not support SATA.
Can you post more details of your problem, and we might be able to help you. For example: what distro, what stage did you get to during the install, relevant hardware specs, etc.
