Gentoo: X11 destroys standard terminals

Ok I installed gentoo (2.6.9-gentoo-r13 using genkernel) on my laptop and installed Xorg-X11, KDE, GDM and ATI-Drivers.
It all looks great except when I start X and try to ctrl+alt+f1 to get to a terminal the screen just goes all scattered and I cant do anything.
I used fglrxconfig to make my xorg.conf file.
It seems like the only way to get out of the problem is to hard-power-off.
No errors in Xorg.0.log
I have no idea what to do... please help.
