Unhappy Gentoo and ATI X600 Mobility on an Acer Aspire 1800

Hello all,

I am a very new user to linux and am needing some major help here before I scrap the thought of using Linux and return back to my comfort zone sadly as windows.

My machine:
Acer Aspire 1800
P4 3.0
1 gig ram
80Gig HD

Gentoo Linux Distro
kernel - linux-2.6.13-gentoo-r5

I have checked the infamous google for hours on end trying to find similar issues regarding ATI's driver and the isntallation of fglrxconfig. I have tried 3 different walkthroughs for various distro's in hopes that something would clue me further into where the issue is, and I am afraid my skill set regarding GURU style troubleshooting of kernel management and how that interacts with installed drivers is minimal to say the least.

(adfsf://odin.prohosting.com/wedge01/gentoo-radeon-faq.html) (link blocked due to sites limit) - is the one i have sitting next to me that also didnt help.

What happened to begin with was simply put a black screen with a line of yellow pixels at the bottom of the screen when i hit "startx" and before that I recieved a "no screens found" error.

I will post as much information as I can in regards to my setup and hope that someone can shed some light into why my card seems lagged when im in Xwindows and how come i get some of these errors.

I have ran

grep -e '(EE)' -e '(WW)' /var/log/Xorg.0.log
Code:
(WW) warning, (EE) error, (NI) not implemented, (??) unknown.
(WW) Open APM failed (/dev/apm_bios) (No such file or directory)

glxinfo | grep render

Modprobe works fine.
ls -l /dev/dri/card0

ls -ld /dev/dri

My Xorg.conf ( the only one that works, i have tried a dozen times to change this using the fglrxconfig command, as well as modifying it through the nano -w in console)
Code:

I cannot understand why for one the fglrxconfig doesn't work for the monitor though with that conf, as I played around and modified the settings it finally worked...

when I do a glxgears I get a
Code:
Xlib: extension "XFree86-DRI" missing on display ":0.0".
Xlib: extension "XFree86-DRI" missing on display ":0.0".
3640 frames in 5.0 seconds = 728.000 FPS
3957 frames in 5.0 seconds = 791.400 FPS
4133 frames in 5.0 seconds = 826.600 FPS
4044 frames in 5.0 seconds = 808.800 FPS
4067 frames in 5.0 seconds = 813.400 FPS
or with a glxinfo | grep direct
Code:
Xlib: extension "XFree86-DRI" missing on display ":0.0".
direct rendering: No
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa GLX Indirect
Can anyone shed some light on this problem, as I have read and read and read issues regarding the flakeyness of ATI's drivers and how they aren't together as nicely as some people would like.

I appreciate any help I get from the people here and look forward to your responses.

Cheers all.
Ian
