If it was by KNOPPIX or something similar you should not only 'cp /proc/mounts /etc/mtab" but edit it to fit your needs ...

We are (where) talking Gentoo 64 bit stuff for an emachines laptop.I am not aware of a 64 bit Knoppix distro - things are slightly different

sorry 'bout that, I just was googling for a similar problem, and after I found the solution by myself I tried to help here.
