Unhappy Gentoo 2.6.8 Hangs on: input: AT Translated Set 2 keyboard...

I've recently installed Gentoo w/ kernel 2.6.8 r3. The system unfortunately hangs on that last line. I'm using an Averatec 3200 series laptop with synaptics touchbad, VIA chipset, VIA Rhine II lan. I would guess the system is either hanging on the line above.. or what I beleive comes next: network stuff. I previously had debian with a 2.4 kernel working just fine, X and all, not to mention the gentoo livecd booting fine, which I also think is a 2.4 kernel. I'm rather fond of the 2.6 kernel, so if anyone has run into this problem before, or has any ideas, I'd greatly appreciate some advice or clues as to the problem, so I can start looking for a fix. (well, I've got a good hunch that running gentoo with a 2.4 kernel would work.. but I'd like to stick to 2.6.6+)

Thanks,
