Fodora Core Bootloader (GRUG) mystery?!

I am a newbie to Linux Feora Core, just installled it yesterday, but I have on
e big problem. Fedora’s boot loader (GRUB) chooses hd(0,0) as the default “
Other” OS. The problem is, Compaq’s recovery disk puts its recovery section
(D:\ Drive) in this partition, and whenever GRUB tries to boot from “Other”
, Compaq’s recovery session is loaded instead of Windows XP. I still couldn’
t figure out why – This has been a nightmare. I’ve installed Red Hat 3 year
s ago on my old Pentium III, and it was damn good and very well self-configure
d. Not sure what went wrong with Fedora though.

I tried to “force” GRUB to use the command “rootnoverify (hd0,1) /n chainlo
ader +1” instead of “rootnoverify (hd0,0) /n Chainloader +1”, which is def
ault at the moment. The commands I used are “GRUG> rootnoverify (hd0,1) save
” and “GRUG> rootnoverify (hd),1) savedefault”, but they didn’t work. =(

Anyone knows how to modify and save it? What's the command for it?

Thanks for tips! =)

GRUB

The easiest thing to do is to boot up Fedora, and then go in and edit the /boot/grub/grub.conf file which stores the bootloader config. You'll need to be root to do this. If you're not sure exactly what drives grub is seeing (and more importantly where), you can get into the grub shell by typing

Code:
grub
as root. That will give you a
Code:
grub>
prompt. If you then type

Code:
root (hd0,
and press tab, it will try and auto-complete it - but as there's more than one choice, it'll show you a list of possible partitions on that disk. You should be able to guess based on the sizes and formats which one is your XP partition. Using that partition you just found, go into /boot/grub/grub.conf as I described above and update the entry for your XP partition.

how to get in?

Hi,

Thanks much for your reply!

I know that I want to boot rootnoverify (hd0,1). Can you please also let me know how I will be able to open and edit the /boot/grub/grub.conf file? I can get around in DOS using "cd, dir, mk, etc", but these commands are not the same as of in Linux console, and I don't know which directory this grub.conf file is located. If I can find this file within the GUI mode (desktop), which program I should use to open, edit and save it?

Thanks again!

Tony

Editing grub.conf

Start a Linux console. Navigate to the right directory:

Code:
cd /boot/grub
Open the grub.conf file in an editor - nano is one I use a lot, there are a couple of others you could use (vi or pico):

Code:
nano -w grub.conf
You can use the arrow keys to navigate, but not the mouse. Make the changes you want, then press Ctrl-X to close the file. It will prompt you if you want to save changes - press y, then hit enter to save it under the same filename (/boot/grub/grub.conf).

If for any reason grub.conf isn't in the /boot/grub directory, you can find it by using the command:

Code:
find / -name grub.conf
Good luck!
