Fixing DVD-drive in Acer travelmate, DMA problem
 
Hi,

I just bought Acer Travelmate 4202WLMi.

Now after quick setup with gentoo everything seemed ok. The problem is missing DMA in DVD-drive. It took about 1,5 hour to burn a single sided DVD :eek:


After googling for a while I've come to conclusion that it's caused by misconfigured kernel but that's as far as I can get by myself.

The problem among other is the missing DMA on the dvd-rom but I can't get it to work.


Does anyone have a solution for this? I use Acer Travelmate 4202WLMi with Intel 945PM chipset.

I could use some quick assistance as I'm moving to another country day after tomorrow and I don't know when I am able to get into internet to check things out. I have problems with cedega too but they seem to be connected with this one.

If anyone has a solution I'm more than happy to hear him out :)

i think you definitely need some kernel options, but i'm not sure exactly which ones the config format refers to. comparing yours to mine, i get these differences:

Yes, those are set.
Those would have been quite obvious sources for this problem :)

I'd quess it's wrong chipset support enabled in kernel or something. I got info in gentoo forums that generic IDE chipset support might cause problems if enabled with correct chipset support.

always start with the obvious, is what i say. ;) it seems strange (to me, anyway) that they're not listed in your config file, though. what kernel version are you using? do you know if you have the right chipset support enabled?

Ok, it gave more detailed info. I removed some of the generic support and tested and it seems that my /dev/hdc is now changed to /dev/sr0. Not sure is this good thing or not. Still not sure what precisely is correct support for this laptops Intel 945PM:

It increased my speed on DVD, though:

Old "scores":
Cached: 347Mb/sec
Buffered: 1,37Mb/sec

New "scores":
Cached: 2192Mb/sec
Buffered: 4,38Mb/sec

Shouldn't that buffered values increase to something like 20Mb/sec or is that as good as it get?
