Firewire external hard drive and Yellow Dog

Hey guys, just a quick verification question:

I'm setting up YDL for someone, and one of the systems is a laptop. For the laptop (a PowerBook running 10.2), I want to use a firewire drive and I think I know how to do it, I just want to make sure. If I partition the main internal HD so it has the 1 MB boot partition on the main drive and partition the FW drive for the swap and files will that work ok? My main concern is that the computer won't mount the HD on startup, and therefor not be able to boot into Linux. What do you think?
Thanks
