External monitor different from notebook screen

I've got an external monitor at work that's different from my widescreen notebook. I'm leary of using sax2 to set it up because when I get it home I might not be able to use it because of the different screen.

How is the best way to handle this?

I'm running SuSE Linux 10.3 on an Acer 9300. The work monitor is a 19" Samsung SyncMaster with a 4/3 ratio.
