Enabling laptop (Powerbook 12") battery monitor

I've just got Debian installed on my Powerbook. After hacking around loads, I've nearly got everything working the way I like it.

The only problem I'm having now, it that the GNOME Battery Monitor applet doesn't seem to know that I've got a battery. It constantly shows there is 0% charge, and it doesn't know the difference between running on battery and via the A/C outlet.

This is a Powerbook, so from what I've heard APM doesn't work on it. Is there a way to get this battery monitor to work? That would be very very helpful.

Cheers.

what about acpi? I never worked on Powerbooks.

I had some minor problems convincing my Debian Sarge that it had acpi and could load these
after some minor tweaking it showed up

ACPI doesn't work on the Powerbooks. I managed to solve it by enabling APM emulation. I had to load the apm_emu module and then start the apmd daemon. Everything worked fine after that.
