dump windows 8 for ubuntu? how?

I have purchased a compaq laptop with wi 8. Hate it can I switch to ubuntu or insert a bios or what?

Hi, I can't see why not, at this stage.

Go for it, lets check the deps of a desktop....

input, networking, sound and graphics should all work, plenty of office progs to choose from.

Plenty of chat, video and music players.

Windows games, ... (?) ah.. maybe.

It would be nice to have more information for the Compaq Laptop. If the unit has a Win/8 logo then you should be able to enter 'UEFI' and disable 'Secure Boot' then set the Laptop to 'BIOS mode'. You should look at the booting section. After that you should be able to install.

Once you've test-driven Ubuntu for a couple of weeks, you'll have a good sense whether or not it will meet all of your needs. Probably you will find that you still need Windows for a few things. But if you want to make a permanent install of Ubuntu at this point, then I recommend you burn a Live DVD or create a Live USB and test-drive it (try without installing) following Step 1 of these instructions:

If this second test-drive is also a success, then at that point you may proceed to Step 2 and beyond to install Ubuntu.
