Driver for x.org on ATI Radeon Mobility card

I have a Compaq Presario 2500 laptop with an ATI Radeon 345M video card. It used to work perfectly with XFree86 with the radeon driver; recently when I upgraded to x.org it is either *very* slow (if used without radeonfb) or, if configured with radeonfb, it freezes the whole OS (Debian testing). I tried a number of different drivers for Ati cards, but the same happens with all. Does anybody have any suggestions what driver I should use and how I should configure xorg.conf?

Any suggestions would be welcome.

I have had the same problem.

I found the solution here

I was surprised since I had been playing a lot with ati drivers without anysuccess. But with the one I found in this page, it worked instantly.

I've tried the i386 version of the fglrx driver, but it does the same thing. Since XFree86's radeon driver worked perfectly before the migration to x.org, is this something I sould report to x.org?
