Does Dell laptop inspiron 1720 supports wifi in monitoring mode?
 
Hi.
I want to use aircrack to crack a wireless network password, but I'm not sure if my wireless card supports monitoring mode. IN the tutorials I've read so far, they say centrino cards can't be put in monitoring mode.Since I wasn't able to find out what chipset my laptop has, i'm not sure I can do what I intend to do here.
Does anyone know?

Probably not. Centrino labelled laptops all have intel wireless adapters and none of them support monitor mode. If you want to know for sure what hardware you have in your dell, get the service tag number off the bottom, go to dell's website on the support page and you will find a place to enter the service tag following which all your hardware will be itemized.

On dells, you have to pay extra for an intel wireless adapter or they stick in a "dell" brand which is a cheap broadcom based wireless adapter. None of those support monitor mode AFAIK. Some, but not all, atheros based cards support monitor mode.

I can't say for certain about newer intel wifi adapters that use the iwl drivers, but my notebook has an IPW 2200bg card and monitor mode is supported with the ipw2200 driver.

There is, however, only limited support for these cards for using the patched drivers that allow packet injection.

I was following a tutorial at aircrack webpage,and I copied a command to put the wifi card in monitoring mode. I got a message in the terminal saying it was in monitoring mode. The following commands didn't work saying the device was BUSY, like package injection and others, so I don't know if it's really working. Anyway, in my terminal it's saying the card is in monitoring mode. So I guess it can be put in that state.

When I last checked, packet injection was not working for intel wifi adapters. If the network is active with packets being exchanged between hosts, WEP can be cracked without injection. I have succesfully used the IPW2200 card with the stock ipw2200 driver to do so. It's just a matter of collecting enough data.
