Question DMA problem on chipset 915GM (Sonoma)

Hello,

i've just got my new laptop 8066 15XGA, 915GM (Sonoma), 1gb RAM, Intel GMA900 VGA, IDE HDD TOSHIBA MK8032GAX ATA DISK. Installed Debian Sarge, recompile kernel to enable lan, video and so on, but can't enable DMA on HDD and DVD RW.

hdparm -t /dev/hda
Timing buffered disk reads: 8 MB in 3.47 seconds = 2.31 MB/sec

hdparm -t /dev/cdrom
Timing buffered disk reads: 2 MB in 7.22 seconds = 283.80 kB/sec

when i trying to enable DMA support

hdparm -d 1 /dev/hda
/dev/hda:
setting using_dma to 1 (on)
HDIO_SET_DMA failed: Operation not permitted
using_dma = 0 (off)

lspci shows

IDE interface: Intel Corporation 82801FBM (ICH6M) SATA Controller (rev 04)

here is my current kernel config http://84.32.56.213/lenux/config.txt

how to compile the kernel in right way?

I got the same problem

Mi laptop is a TravelMate 1450 and it has the same chipset.

It seems that the chipset has 3 ports 2 ATA & one IDE, The drive
of mi laptop is connected to the ide and i got no option in the
BIOS to use older driver ICH5 (that seems to have other BIOS) so
linux SATA drivers (i tried UHCI and the PIIXn) don't recognise the
drive and the IDE ones don't let me use DMA.

¿What can we do?

Hi,

With the release of kernel 2.6.15, it seems some of the problems of SATA drives has been fixed. Specifically, I think the new kernel may finally have ATAPI support for SATA which means you should be able to set DMA for your burner drive. For your hard drive, if the new kernel doesn't work, you could try passing hdc=noprobe during boot time. If you google for "problems with sata and linux" you'll find a ThinkWiki page at the very top that makes this suggestion.

Has anyone had any success with the new kernel 2.6.15 and DMA for the SATA driver so far? Please post your experiences!

Good luck,

Ramin

Thanks for the info!!! I'll try it....

But I've found at linuxkernel a post with a patch (some lines to add to the linux/drivers/ide/pci/piix.c). It seems to be only ID info about the chipset but with that I've reached 22 MB/s results with hdparm. Also the DVD burner goes faster. Here is the patch, I'ts only needed to edit file and add the lines starting with + at the right place.

It's a link [ seclists.org/lists/linux-kernel/2005/Jul/0273.html ]

Hope it works for all people with the same problem.

SeeU!
