Dist. suggestions for old laptop

I have an old Dell Latitude CP M233ST laptop that I want my wife to be able to use for general purpose stuff (e-mail, word processing, etc.). It has a 233 MHz Pentium 2 and the RAM has been upgraded to 256MB. I'm looking for suggestions for a lightweight distro with a strong community that will run easily on this machine. I'm running Ubuntu on my desktop right now. Would Xubuntu be light enough? I'd really like a Debian-derived distro. Thanks!

Have a look at http://distrowatch.comit should be able to handle most of your questions about distro's with older hardware.

Hope it helps

I had some success running Zenwalk on an older laptop for awhile. It's a Slackware distribution based on XFCE, designed to be a very lightweight distro. I ran it on a Pentium III 733 with 256 MB or RAM and it worked pretty smoothly. Don't know how well it'll fly on the P2, but it had a lot of nice features out of the box on mine (wireless, suspend, etc).

Hi,

I installed Puppy Linux on mine. Its much worse and required more hat tricks than yours. Mine is a P75 with 32 meg ram and a 1.2 G hard drive. It turns out the pcmcia slots in mine are shot so I had to use the floppy disk and serial port to do everything. Once in...it runs great. So I installed on an old clunk PC with a few more resources than the old laptop. I'm using it right now.

DSL (Damn Small Linux) was recommended in another reply. I tried that too and it will also work. Its even smaller than Puppy. I tried both on several machines. Sometimes Puppy works when DSL fails to find everything. Sometimes its the other way around. Get them both. Both of them run from the live CD and both can be installed to the hard drive.

Bill
