display doesn't go to sleep after inactivity

I have a Dell Inspiron 600m running Ubuntu Dapper. Under Power Managment Preferences, I have the display set to go to sleep after 5 minutes of inactivity, but it doesn't.

I'm not sure where I should look for troubleshooting...any help would be appreciated.

I think you need to add:
Option "DPMS"

to your monitor section in xorg.conf. Mine just went blank until I did that, now it actually powers down the backlight.
