I found a SZ series on Sony's website and its specifications indicated the drive is a SATA device. How old is your computer and what are its specifications? RH 8 is too old to have SATA support "out of the box". Without knowing the exact chipset I could not say which distribution might work. I suggest trying fedora, SuSE or Mandriva.

BTW version 8 has reached end of life and is no longer supported by RH.

Check http://www.linux-on-laptops.com/sony.html. Note warnings about Sony using beginning of SATA HD for rescue/restore. Your model may be on list with linux install notes.

Any particular reason for wanting to use rh8.3? As the others have said, it is too old to support your hardware right out of the box. Try a newer distro if possible.
