DESPARATE: help me get "hibernate" working

I run Ubuntu Karmic on my laptop. I point+click to the upper right corner and select "Hibernate" (suspend-to-disk). Most postings say "... just works ..." Well, not for me!!!

Here is what happens to me:
  1. The system goes dark
  2. I get a blinking "new moon" LED
  3. The disk active LED flickers
  4. The computer DOES NOT TURN OFF
  5. Nothing happens when I close the lid
  6. Everything I try does not wake the box
The only way to wake-up is to POWER_FAIL then COLD_START. After GRUB-2 does its thing there is no evidence that we are doing any sort of wake-from-hibernate.
  • I have no idea which program responds to the Hibernate menu item.
  • I have no idea about any sort of Hibernate-->Wake logs
(I've read pm-suspend.log and all I see is "success".)
  • I have no idea what to look for in any other logs.
    (I've read kern.log messages syslog.)

Someone must be able to help me sort this out.

PS/ I have the same trouble with SLEEP (suspend-to-ram) from the panel menu.

PPS/ I have these same troubles all other times when either SLEEP or HIBERNATE are useful: lid-closed, low battery, critical battery, etc.

Make sure your laptop doesn't have any SC card inserted, because it can cause the laptop not to suspend and/or hibernate, and the symptoms are those that you describe.

I spent over than 1 month before i saw a post saying that there are some problems with sd cards and the suspend process.

If thats the case check my blog http://sergiolima.wordpress.com/2010...ndhibernate-2/.

Thank you, thank you, thank you and again thank you. I've been searching for a solution to this problem for months. I leave an SD card with my password manager in my Lenovo X60 which boots to Linux Mint, Win7, WinXP and Bodhi Linux. Suspend (from the logout manager) works in all but Mint, but that's my main OS. I just ejected the SD card and the laptop suspended like it should. Now I'll just have to see if lid closed, etc. work as well.
