Dell Latitude E6410

I'm having difficulty installing any distro on my Dell Latitude E6410. It will boot off of a CD or USB and startup sounds can be heard, but the screen remains dark even when attempting to switch to terminal via Ctrl+Alt+F1, so I can't attempt to change the xorg.conf to boot using Vesa drivers. Does anyone have any advice on how to fix the problem, or dealt with it before?

Try to switch monitors or setup display brightness using the apropriate function keys.

At boot you have a choice normally to select safe mode options. Try some of them or all of them.

This laptop is available with three different graphics cards (2x Intel, 1x nVidia). Which one is installed in your system, and which distribution are you trying to install?

Also have an E6410 but with NVidia and after installing Debian Squeeze also got a black screen (am surprised you get a black screen for Intel graphics) : seems video is now in 2.6.32 kernel and as my machine uses Nvidia need to disable kernel drivers in first Boot and install nvidia stuff . This is done via “nomodeset” option in grub boot kernel command line parameters (edit grub2 command script by typing “e” at boot)
After this , machine will boot in VESA graphics mode and I then needed to install nvidia (or the current graphical) packages (for nvidia add non-free to sources.list).
If confused google nomodeset
