DELL latitude D620 - dual monitor screen scrambled after login

Hi All,

I've got a DELL D620 laptop that I've installed CentOS6.2 x64. The laptop has an intel 945GM integrated graphics card.

After some assistance from this forum to get the Intel driver to be recognized, the desktop started up perfectly. I managed to get everything working until I attached an external monitor to the laptop to see what would happen.

The symptom is this: when I attach the second monitor and boot, the X11 login screen appears fine on both monitors. I am able to move the mouse from monitor to monitor with no problem. The background looks fine.

It's only when the desktop appears (after login) that the screen scrambles. If I jiggle the mouse around sometimes the menu bar materializes, but the desktop area remains scrambled. From the menu bar, I am able to start the Display applet and both monitors and their proper screen resolutions are displayed.

Apart from the scrambled screen, the system appears to be operational.

Here's the info on my system:

- laptop LCD 1440x900
- external monitor 1920x1080
- no xorg.conf

Hi All,

Additional information. It appears that the oddness has a pattern. The left 1/3 of the external monitor screen is clear, while the right 2/3 is not. If I change the res of the LCD, it changes the size of the 'clear area' on the external monitor.

I'm wondering if it is not using the correct laptop LCD resolution and it carrying it over into the external monitor? And then, if doesn't know what to do with the remainder of the external monitor?

All settings in CentOS show what are the correct screen res's.

Maybe this info might tweak a cause to all this.

Corey.
