Dell Latitude c610 mouse only works if another button is pressed

This is a new issue to me. I am working on a Dell Latitude c610. Important background info should include we first install Windows XP and the touchpad does not work in it either. The synaptic touchpad does not work in Linux also, but we found that with an external mouse we could control the pointer as long as we held down a key (any key) on the keyboard. Any ideas anyone?

I think it is broken hardware, apparently it is not uncommon for this laptop. I found a work-around that will not be too bothersome in this situation - use a usb mouse(better than opening up the computer and trying to mess with the hardware).

I don't know which mouse substitute is built into your Dell, but I would be happier w/ a USB "real" device (i.e. mouse or trackball) anyway.
