Dell Inspiron N5040 - is it friendly to Linux ?

Hello friends. I decided to buy a laptop but not sure if it will run Linux fine.

The most of all I'm not sure in Intel HD Graphics. I googled but still not sure because I know that it's often not easy to make Intel graphic cards in laptops work well with Linux.

It doesn't matter what kind of GNU/Linux system to run but the best for me are Zenwalk/Debian/Ubuntu. And it'll be nice if most (or all of hardware will work out of the box.
So, write please your point of view - is this laptop a good choice?

Best regards, Lexus45.

Zenwalk will run great on every Dell I have ever tried it on, I have 2 Dell latitude laptops and they both work great. 1 has the intel hd graphics and the other has the nvidea chip set.I have installed it on 4 Dell laptops without a problem.

suggests that modern ubuntu runs well on the machine. Probably most other distros as well. You may need to add drivers or tinker a little with config.

The most important variable is the wireless chipset. A lot of Dells have Broadcom, which can require a little extra effort to set up but can be made to work. I gather from what I've read on these forums that Realtek can sometimes be problematical.

I have two Dells (Mini 9 and 1545n) with Broadcom; both ran Ubuntu just fine when I enabled the "Proprietary Drivers for Devices" repo.

The Mini 9 is now running Salix and the instructions on the Salix website to get the Broadcom working succeeded flawlessly. The 1545n is now running Slackware and I'm still working on the Broadcom (but I'll get there).

This reminds me a Dell where I had to tranfer the drivers with usb stick. They were in the repo, yes, but it is of little use until you actually can connect to the internet... Would be handy to have this option available (or install with wired net).
