Dell Inspiron 8600 Touchpad/Slackware 10

Hi, I am trying to get my touchpad to work with my current configuration
of hardware/software. Basically I am running the 2.4.26 kernel and I
would like to know what kind of patches will I need to get the touchpad
to work. Ive looked on linux-laptop.net for any information but there is
nothing helpful. It seems that alot of people on the freenode network
said that I am going to need the 2.6.* kernel but it is not completely
stable yet and if there are other routes with 2.4.26 then please tell
me...But if there is nothing at all then I guess I will have to resort
to using the 2.6.* kernel.

look here. if you're using a synaptics touchpad, this should work for you. no need to upgrade to the 2.6 kernel.
