Dell Inspiron 6000 BIOS problems - blank screen on Ubuntu boot
Hi, I've just reinstalled Ubuntu on my Dell inspiron 6000 Laptop. When I boot I just get a blank, black screen.
I've had this problem before, it was caused by the Dell A09 BIOS. I think I need A06, but I cant find it anywhere for download, and I've deleted the A06 BIOS boot file that I downloaded a few months ago.
So if anyone has or has a link to Dell Inspiron 6000 A09 BIOS A06 or earlier please help!
When you say "when I boot", what do you mean? At what point does this happen? Can you get to grub? Can you boot in a failsafe mode?
Also, you might be interested to note that the Dell site apparently still has earlier versions of the BIOS up there, they just aren't linked. By searching their support section, I found the link to the latest BIOS to be http://ftp.us.dell.com/bios/I6000A09.EXE
However, when I modified this to http://ftp.us.dell.com/bios/I6000A06.EXE it seems that the file is there (i.e. I didn't get a "file not found" error). Try that.
By boot I mean when I select Ubuntu from the GRUB list. It loads for a while and thend the screen goes blank. If I press the power button once I get to a prompt, but it is not active - I cant type or input at all. As I remember it from last time, Ubuntu is loading, its the display that isnt working.
I've tried downloading A06-A03 and all of the files give an error when I try to install. Something like:
The NTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal instruction...
And then I have to exit the install.
Going to try to boot in failsafe, but as I remember from last time it didnt work either.
OK, what happens if, at boot into grub, you select interactive mode using 'e' and add the following options to you kernel boot option?
