Dell inspiron 1520 w/integrated intel gm965 express/Ubuntu Hardy/external monitor

Yo, new to linux and decided to try ubuntu 8.04. so far love everything about it except the lack of access as a root user and the display properties. this is my problem i can't seem to figure out how to use my vga output to display my monitor on an external monitor or even set up a dual monitor. It worked fine with my copy of XP so i know its not hardware. i think i just need to find the right driver or software for my ubuntu os any help?
