Question Debian kernel 2.6.15 on Dell Inspiron 710m

I just got a new laptop, Dell Inspiron 710m... and i was trying to get severall things working...
My resolution when i run windows, is 1280 x 800, on linux it is 1024 x 768,...
It won't read my battery at all... so i always have to keep it charged... it says i have to reconpile the kernel which i already did,, and still does not work...
I was wondering if anybody already installed Debian on this machine and has it working completely????
Any help?????
i searched online but i can't find anything at all....
