Debian install via USB WiFi dongle for laptop with internal non-compatible wifi card
I am trying to help someone install Debian. We communicate over Skype. They have a Lenovo laptop (S145-15AST) with an internal Wifi card. It has NO ethernet port (crazy). Also no optical drive. The Debian install is on a USB flash drive. The Debian install does not see the wifi card. I am wondering if she can use an external USB Wifi dongle like the TP-LINK TL-WN821N which is claimed to be compatible on the Dedbian website. There is a note about MAC filtering which I dont understand. I assume you can only do this AFTER a successful install.
Is it possible to have an internal incompatible wifi card and a wifi dongle and install Debian over a Wifi connection? Thanks. |
Yes, I have done this before. Even easier with an external USB NIC, which is how I USUALLY reinstall several of my laptops that don't have NIC's as all my wifi cards require firmware.
