Debian Etch Install Acer Aspire CD-ROM not mounted

Hi folks,

I have a new Acer Aspire 7730G laptop and want to install Debian Etch alongside Win xp. I started the installation but in Detecting Hardware To Find CD-ROM Drives section I got stuck since the installer didn't recognize my cd-rom drive. Any hints how to proceed?

regards,

Jani

I bought recently also a new laptop my CD wasn't recognized, too. So I just tried the weekly builds and debian testing recognized my drive.

Talking Debian - Etch ala EtchAndAHalf

http://cdimage.debian.org/debian-cd/4.0_r6/i386/iso-cd/

You might also want to check out the Netinstall of Etch-n-half

Its an updated installer and some updated packages...my guess is to bridge the divid between older and newer hardware..

EtchAndAHalf Wiki
http://wiki.debian.org/EtchAndAHalf

The EAAH (Etch And A Half) netinst image enabled me to load Debian, but booting is still an issue.. timeouts on certain ATA commands/channels (ata2) and then after attempting a 2nd boot I get told my root partition's mount point doesn't exist.

still better than just sitting there with no valid cdrom detection. LOL

You could also install Debian Lenny (testing) from a USB Flash drive,

Check out the Debian AspireOne wiki for how it's done with the netbooks that have NO optical drive in them..

Worked great and you get a 2.6.26 kernel from the start..
