critical temperature reached -- analysis

Hi all,
I have been using Ubuntu since 1yr on my Compaq Presario V3029AU Laptop. I have been facing this very common problem and not been able to find a solution,

Critical temperature reached (100C) shutting down..

This doesnot happen always. It happens only when i am running a CPU intensive job like kernel compilation,or worse when I am playing Mafia on Wine.

Has anybody really solved this problem? I came across several posts saying that this was a bug in ubuntu kernel, but I have tried newer distros --gentoo ,backtrack all shutdown giving the above message.(In gentoo it is worse, I cant compile X.. and you have to compile everything to get things working)..
I have come to conclusion that this is a bug in kernel, even with the option acpi=off ,my laptop switches off with no messages wat so ever.

Users of Compaq presario V3029AU ..Have u found any solution? This has crippled me from playing games or compiling stuff in linux

Have you checked the CPU fans and cooling grids to be sure they are working and not clogged?

My daughter used to use an old Toshiba Satellite notebook that would fail playing DVD's after about 20-30 minutes. The machine would just get flacky and shut down randomly. I took the keyboard off and looked at the CPU fan and discovered it was caked with dust and dirt that was preventing the CPU from cooling properly. Cleaning out the fans and airways made a tremendous difference in the old laptop's reliability.

I have also seen the same problem with certain Dell laptops that use a radiator arrangement. The radiator gets totally clogged with dust that will block all air flow, causing them to overheat quickly. The Inspiron 5150 is really bad about this.

Also, if the fans are not coming on as the system heats up, then you might have an ACPI problem.

Good luck.

hmm.. I updated my BIOS from F.05 to F.37 . It seems to have solved my problem.

Thanks, now I begin to wonder if that is the bug in ACPI of kernel source or my system BIOS
