Hello everyone,
I'm having this annoying bug with all the linux distro i've tried.
I have this 4 years old laptop, brand Acer model Apire 5610-4534.
I have a USB wifi mouse hooked on it and sometime used a USB hard
drive for backup purpose. This laptop used to have Vista on it but i
installed recently Mint Linux and others.
Installation went OK but every time DVD or install seems to lag or stop,
i just had to move the mouse or press the keyboard then it would continue.
I tought this was normal but as i finished installation and used the
system the same thing seem to stay.
If i dont use the mouse or keyboard during a couple of seconds the CPU
halts, the time on the desktop stops, the sound stutters, and video also
stop.
Then on mouse or keyboard input everything is back to normal except for
time lost on the clock ?
Can anybody help me on this ? I would really like to use linux on this
laptop.
TIA for your answers
Slowness in an install is annoying, but be patient. It took 5 hours to install ubuntu on my laptop, because it was challenged for memory. If you feel you may have cut it short, reinstall and leave it overnight if needed.
I see it's using an i945. Not a great start. Post the o/p of lspci please, so we can see what we're up against. I'd start looking for a chipset thing which probably has a bug fix in the kernel, but it mightn't be enabled in yours. I'd ditch the wireless mouse temporarily.
The reason mouse or keyboard fix it is that they generate an interrupt, a 'wake up' call to the cpu. Something has the wrong driver, at a guess.
As far as installation, it took about 25 mins except that i had to stay close and move
the mouse once and a while. I did try the laptop without the USB wifi mouse and it is
the same. Quatity of ram should not be an issue, when i bought the laptop 4 years ago,
i upgraded it from 1 to 2 gig of ram. Like you said business_kid there is an interupt
or a wrong driver picked on install and as a live cd. I have googled around and found
some people having problems with pulseaudio ? I did try their solutions with no results.

If you installed in 25 minutes, there's enough memory about. It could be over-agressive power saving stuff, or some cute bug.
I'd run top, which refreshes every 5 seconds, and touch nothing. Watch. Disable screen saving if needed (easiest in X) what happens when it "dozes off?"
My guess is that this is a problem with interrupts.
There are many possible fixes for this, but you could try adding noapic and / or nolapic to your kernel boot line.
I've done my homework business_kid and did run top. Top stops like any other
software running. All the info freeze then thaw on mouse movement. Is There
a particular application that would tell me something ? As for noapic and
nolapic options i will try it next and feed the results, thanks.
I'm glad to tell you that the noapic option did the trick YEAH !!!
The reason it took me so long is that i did not know how to change
that in GRUB2. I googled around and found this :
in a terminal ...
gksudo gedit /etc/default/grub (enter password)
add it to the GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT line
you can see I added noapic
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash noapic"
save the file then run in the terminal
sudo update-grub
The linux i'm using is Mint 11 but i guess it's ok for all ubuntu based.
Thanks all and especially tradegar, i'm now back in linux YOUHOU !!!
