could you analyse this 'UNetbootin' error -- can't boot from usb - so using 'UNetbootin'

basic overview of problem:

**goal:** trying to install a new linux os (any working one is fine)
**key problem:** the laptop does not boot from usb

**laptop** = lenovo u310 (none of the reset / bios methods work)
**os** = mint 18.1 (completely dysfunctional, crashes and freeze randomly like a min after booting the os)

---

on 'GNU GRUB' version 2.02~'

it has the option 'UNetbootin'

when i select this and press enter

---

it shows a black screen, black screen says:

> running early hook [udev]
>starting version 232

other things

then

>mounting 'dev/disk/by-label/' to 'run/miso/bootmnt'

then stuff

> ERROR: '/deve/disk/by-label/' device did not show up after 30 secondds...'

> Falling back to interactive prompt
>You can try to fix the problem manually, log out when you are finished

> sh: can't access tty; job control turned off

>[rootfs ]#

where i can type something

---

im very new to linux so please explain what should be done and why? to solve this problem

It looks like your system is expecting a device that isn't being mounted. Depending on what tools are available will determine what your options are. You can generally type
Code:

help
here to see. You probably need to edit your /etc/fstab

anything else besides 'UNetbootin'

or....?

ppl say ubnetbootin is bad

any other possible or best solutions?

estabroo 08-18-2017 04:37 PM

Could potentially be the size of the usb stick as well, I have a laptop that won't boot any usb stick over 4GB in size. It doesn't find the device when I use the larger ones but works just fine with the smaller ones.

The current version of Unebootin is brand new and very well regarded. Many Windows users use as well as Linux users.

Yes, like that thread pointed pointed out, use Unebootin and try different formats.

michaelk 08-20-2017 09:20 AM

According to this thread you can boot from the USB 2.0 port by pressing Fn+F12 at start-up and selecting USB HDD.

https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Lenovo-...rk/td-p/968597

rufus is another windows tool that can create a bootable flash drive from an ISO file.

Yes, if Unebootin does not work Rufus might work. michaelk has a very good point about the USB 2.0 port.

linuxhard 08-20-2017 05:49 PM

it seems like i didn't make it clear in the OP that none of the hotkeys work

there's no way to go into bios

'lenovo u310 (none of the reset / bios methods work)'

linuxhard 08-25-2017 01:53 PM

is it 100% for sure that a external cd drive with a iso in it would auto-boot?

without changing bios or anything?

No, it is about a 50-50 chance.

linuxhard 08-26-2017 12:48 AM

so is there no non-bios method to this problem at all?

the only thing left is the 'mokmanager' but nobody knows how to make it start on startup

what you are describing here does not seem BIOS related, because the boot process is already beyond that.
the computer did actually boot into Linux already!

now, what you need to do:
  1. decide which distro you want to try out
  2. go to that distro's website and follow instruction on how to create a bootable usb medium
  3. do that, and try to boot
if it works now, good, we can move on to the next step.

if not, provide ALL information (commands issued, full output received).

linuxhard 08-26-2017 06:36 PM

that was already done and that's the error

what does it mean and how to fix it?
