Connecting a Pocket PC to Linux

I have a Dell Axim X5 and I was just wondering, is there a way to sync/connect it to my RH8 comp. I tried installing MS ActiveSync with WINE but that didn't work out... Help?!?!?

Have you tried the PDA sync tool, that might be for handsprings and palms though. If you can't find any else you could also make a incredibly small windows partition and put the sync software on there

I have an HP Jornada 568, and I can connect it (albeit in a very primitive fashion) to my Linux box using the synce utility.

Check out synce

I almost forgot.

I bet this will be of interest to most Linux users who use PDAs.

handhelds.org

I'm watching this one closely.

I, too have a Dell Axim, and I have tried the SynCE project. I cannot get Linux to even acknowledge that I plugged in the PDA... after that, the SynCE plug-in should work.

I guess I'll try the USB devices search to see if there is a way to recognize it first.

If anyone has gotten farther, let me know. My goal is syncing my GNUcash file like my Microsoft Money file, and then I can erase M$ off of my computers!

Yeah, I tried SynCE with my Axim too... never worked... took forever just to get SynCE to run... probably something due to the way my RH9 distro is set up but when I finally got it to run it never could find my Axim... As far as handhelds.org... well... I'd LOVE to switch to an open source alternative to PocketPC 2002... but well... the linux for handhelds project isn't really far enough along yet to replace PPC2002... Plus, I've heard no success stories yet with the Axim... and I don't wan't to risk jacking my PDA up... I use it too much and it cost more than I'm willing to just throw away...

Zaurus? haven't heard of them... I'll have to check it out... not that I really have enough money to really do anything right now... as for the Linux, How is it? Been hearing some OK things about Lin on PDA but keep hearing that it's not really up to par with the commercial alternatives...

The Zaurus is made by Sharp. I'm running Open Zaurus (OZ)
there's info and screenshots at www.openzaurus.org

I find it very comparable to commercial handheld software (pocket PC, Palm OS, etc) It has all the same functionality pretty much right out of the box. Even the wireless drivers are pretty good in my experience. I read on a site not long ago about someone who turned their handheld into a web server, running Apache. Not necessarily useful, but pretty cool. That's why I love Linux.

Hope that's enough info (without sounding too much like an advertisement )
