I have same interest like you wrote about.

A list of specialized remixes of known Linux distros that work out of the box on the very mini laptops.

I bought an ACER Aspire One D 250 some 10 days ago and have tried to read as much as possible before downloading something to use on an USB mem pin.

I can add two suggestions to your list.

I started to read a lot of feedback on the different distros and Crunchbang seems to be the one they liked best. Maybe if looks are important they like the others better but linux nerds? seems to prefer Crunchbang to the more colorful versions.

Jolicloud seems to be a Ubuntu Remix that needs invite because it is in Alpha and it is more like a web sync thing that allow you to save preferences on the web so you always have it handy if you install jolicloud on another computers.

Like you me too want readers to tell how they experienced the distro the chosen.

to be fair one should add Kuki Linux but the two main developers have personal things to take care of now so they rely on the contributers to it to continue any further development.

Antix 8.2 on a Asus EEE 900. How I installed below.

AntiX 8.2 Install

I made Phalanx-9.04 so that all the netbook/lappy stuff was added to apt sources
I also used LXDE and many lighter apps

Installed size is about 1.8GB
and it includes over 1120 pkgs
including Chromium, Opera, Firefox, Flash10, OpenOffice Writer
Mplayer, lots of stuff

So, if the user wanted; they could install lxlauncher and the other netbook stuff to convert it to
UNR type desktop

In summary; it's smaller than most netbook distro's, has many apps they dont,
plays off USB natively, and moderately small installed footprint vs UNR
and it has Remastersys; enabling the end user to roll their own distro from it

I've tested Crunchbang failed to get ethernet card going.
Tested puppy 4.3.1 failed to get ethernet card going
tested flux flux and like the look and available programs but failed
to get ethernet going.

Tested kuki linux for netbooks and that one worked out of the box.

Are there others that work with AAO D250 right out of the box?

I say CrunchBang-9.04-Lite is the best i have seen

Please note that I have CrunchBang-9.04-Lite installed on my testbed lappy
a Toshiba 7000CT with 160MB RAM and 4GB HD

It runs beautifully at about 80-90MB RAM sitting still
and my screen is like 10inches and crunch uses just the right font sizes,etc
it rocks even better than my own Phalanx-9.04
Installed size is lite too at about sub 2GB
and CrunchBang is the ONLY one with an easy to use hotkey setup
so you dont even need a mouse!

CrunchBang-9.04-Lite is Numero Uno for me!

The OP actually listed 4 Ubuntu's and 2 fedora's in the opening thread?

Every distro is totally different from another
even when using the same desktop
CrunchBang uses special scripts,etc just for it's openbox desktop
so installing ubuntu and openbox aint gonna get you a CrunchBang Desktop,etc

And I believe this thread is most useful so far?

I didn't pursue it because I did a trend analysis on netbooks...

What I had come to find out was that the current trend was moving towards bigger screen size, faster cpu's, better graphics cards and support of other manufacturers to include AMD and ATI...

What you'll find in the next 1 to 2 years is...

There releasing netbooks with bigger screens ranging 11.6 to 13.3...

faster cpu's which most netbook users want a dual core ,
but manufacturers are waiting for price to drop....

Graphics Cards Nvidia has released Nvidia Ion capable of playing video games and movies with no choppy screens...

What I had intially missed in this analysis was do to me following other trends such as LCD being replaced by LED's and the addition of the new psp.....


I usually follow a lot of Electronic Trends not so much computer trends... Since both of them are inline with each other... Finding less important for CD-RW AND DVD player... with media content being able to go on usb sticks... Thus meaning we no longer need a full laptop with built in burners.... Were both the laptop and the netbook end up may blur the lines between the two devices...

Both HP and Acer laptops have both a 13.3 inch model ranging in price from 450 to 499 just outside the netbook range of price at 299 to 425...


Why I say putting down which Netbook distro is best is your going to find in near future they are able to run just about any linux distro and not one intended for a small screen...

I FEEL IT WAS A TRAGEDY THAT I BASED MY OPINION OFF OF ONE NETBOOK...
SEEING THERE ARE PROBABLY MORE THEN 200 MODELS...

I'm using FC11 on my Aspire (I got mine for US$266) and the experience is not much different to my 17" Windows PC. Do try some experiments with the task bar and widgets. Touching the relevant screen edge will bring it up and clicking on the "active" window's title bar will hide it. Lots of other goodies too.

As for speed, go to The Road to Elysium. Jorge's blog will tell you many things to make the beastie faster.

One common mistake is to want acres of memory. This machine is uncommonly expandable and I use an external HDD to keep my data "permanently backed up" - plus DVD's. With 3 USB ports and 2 SD slots RAM can be expanded - transparently at that! - to the hilt and 12 externals can be hooked up.

Of course it can be used as a first and only computer. Maybe excepting gaming with high speed graphics. The small size makes it a safer streetwise option anyway.

And yes, I also wanted to give mine back after two days.

FC11 is that short for Fedora 11? what does the C stand for?
Could you link to that linux distro. I fail to see it mention in Distrowatch

In what way is it good for small netbooks

I thought Fedora was very big. Is this a special version then? Lite?
