Compiz Freeze

I recently migrated from Ubuntu 7.04 to Debian Etch. I configured the NVidia driver and installed Compiz from the standard repo. Compiz worked like a charm in Feisty, but it refuses to work in Debian. When I execute

	compiz --replace

the window borders disappear and the system locks up. I can still restart X, but it becomes non-functional when I try compiz. Any ideas? Did I post this in the wrong section?

I'm running on a GeForce4 440MX mobile video card. For the moment, I'm running Beryl, but I find it inferior to Compiz Fusion.

I'm amazed that it worked on Feisty with that card.
It looks like compiz did load, but emerald (window decorations) did not. And then it crashed for whatever reason. Could you post your xorg.conf file, and run glxinfo | grep direct.

Have you followed a howto? If you did, please post the link.
