compiz and new harddrive

I installed compiz on my notebook (ECS 553) and when I open other windows i.e. screen capture the box is blank. I know the options are still there because if i guess the position it will pop-up a save as option. this is true with many common option and program windows? anyone know the fix for this.
Also, I have a spare notebook HD i was wondering if I could install another OS on that and still be able to switch back and forth between the HD's to get different OS's any ideas on this take? just want to make sure before I loose all the data.
TIA
