Compaq Presario V5000 laptop (Mint 17.1 cinnamon) won't shut down after updates
 
Compaq Presario V5000 laptop (Mint 17.1 cinnamon). Laptop shut downs normal after a fresh install. I then updated with all 1-3 levels (not 4-5) of the updates. Now the laptop will not shut down unless I hold the off button. The green LM logo stays on the screen. Newbie with Linux. Any step by step instructions would greatly be appreciated to get Mint to shut down clean. Thank you!

Don't know that I've seen this problem with LM 17.1 Cinnamon, but I have run into situations where I could not do a shutdown from the desktop session, but could from the display manager. What happens if you log out of the Cinnamon session, then try to do a shutdown from the MDM (the display manager)?
