compaq help
 

I just got a new conpaq presario 2500 and was wondering if I would have trouble installing linux on it. It has a great touch pad mouse with the scroller on the side of it. I wonder if any one out there has had trouble with installing it on this type of laptop..? And if its even worth the effort.

I installled SuSE 8.2 on my Compaq 2170 with no problems. I needed to dual boot with WinXP, so I used Partition Magic to resize the NTFS partition, and leave most of the hard drive for linux. All of the hardware was recognized and configured automatically (except for the winmodem, of course). ACPI required turning on the acpid daemon in YAST. Getting my NetGear MA401RA wireless card working took some doing, but now works.

I run a Presario 2100 and have a friend who uses a 2500 with GNU/Linux running on them just fine. I had problems at first but searching the web and these type of boards helped me get a great running machine going. One thing I have noticed is to get it all running right I had to recompile the kernel on almost all distros. I suggest Debian on it though.

The kernel recompile hornbeck refers to is probably necessary to get the limited acpi support available in linux. SuSE 8.2 has this patch in its stock kernel, no recompile needed. The battery monitor is the only acpi function currently supported in linux.

i have the 2500 had trouble under 9.1 updated to 10.1 and everything is working great (everything)

Infrared on Presario 2500?

When you say "everything", does that include the IR port, as that's the only bit I've had problems with under SUSE 9.1
