Compaq C700 with Ubuntu 8.04, Laptop brightness problem
 

I'm having a Compaq c700 laptop on which i've installed Ubuntu 8.04. The laptop brightness adjustment keys (Fn+F7 for dimming and Fn+F8 for brightning) aren't working. Can anyone help me out with this? I would really appreciate it. Thanks guys.

I've got the same computer with Vista which is something of a dog so I have a couple of questions:

1. Did you install Ubantu in a dual boot setup with Vista? How so?
2. Did Ubantu work directly on the C751NR out of the box, so to speak (aside from the brightness control), or did you have to spend time tracking down drivers, etc?
3. Anything you'd like to advise on putting Ubantu on the machine before I tackle it?

Hi Bill,

I installed Ubuntu using the wubi installer, which was very straightforward (just follow the onscreen instructions). Took about 20-30 min. Everything works fine except:

1. Wireless ethernet (wired works fine). There are many posts about how to get this working with ndiswrapper or madwifi, but I haven't got it working yet. That's probably a user issue, not an ubuntu issue :)

2. Brightness control.

Also, sometimes the touchpad doesn't work on startup. A restart usually solves the problem.

I just found a fix for the brightness problems on my Compaq C751NR:

Works like a charm, and will probably work on other Compaq laptops.
