Compaq 1592DT Laptop w/ Sound Problem!

Yeah its a Pentium Pro 233MMX, w/ 96 MegRam, 3.2Gig Hdd, etc etc
I have tried Redhat 9.0, which installed fine....everything worked except for the sound. I know for a fact it is a ESS1878 soundcard, which i have tried quite a few different drivers, but with no success. I eventually found i might need to re-compile the kernel.
Tried that, but it need GCC to be installed, so i tried to install GCC, but it came up with an error "Can't find CC in $PATH" or whatnot. I have tried "Whereis cc" and got no location. can anyone help with any or all the solutions to help me ???

if i can get RedHat 9.0 working 100% i will definitely scrap Windows XP on my Home PC and put a distro on it!

Thanks if you can help ..

Stephen

did you install gcc? there on your rh install cds. basically install every rpm that has gcc in it.

but before you go about recompiling the kernel, did you make sure your sound server is started at login? kde uses arts and i think gnome uses oss. basically both have sound server configurations. in kde it's in control center and for gnome it's Start Button (whatever) > Settings > Multimedia > Sound. make sure that "Start Sound Server at login" is checked.
