OP, I know this is a little late but if you are in the US you can check newegg.com for refubished laptops in case you help other people.

1/2 year report

For all who wanted updates on how this turned out, she is now a proud geek, though still learning, and is also doing professional-quality digital art on the same laptop. She's very happy with all of this and sends thanks to all the folks, here and elsewhere, that helped get her a start in computing technology.
