ChecksumBootProblemOnHP Laptop

I am a newbie to Linux trying to get it working on my HP Laptop Pavilion zt1230. I have tried three versions of Linux-Insert, Beatrix, and Knoppix. They fail to boot on my laptop with the checksum error message. The distribution restore CD boots fine so it probably is not the drive. These programs boot fine on two other machines, emachines, that I have. Insert and Beatrix were downloaded and burned to CD; Knoppix is a CD obtained in the mail. Help.

Faulty CD drive? Can you get other CDs to boot e.g. Windows installer disk (sorry it was the only bootable CD i could think of that wasn't linux based) obviously you don't have to continue the install it just to see if the drive works.

Yes, the drive boots fine with the distribution restore CD. Since my original posting, I have tried Linux Puppy in addition to the others listed and still no luck. I also created a floppy boot disk and ran Puppy from it. I now longer got the checksum error but Puppy still wouldn't run. I sure would like to run Linux on this Laptop but am near giving up. Any help????
