Change the mac boot up logo from the blinking question mark

I recently acquired a macbook pro 15" with a failing hard drive. After replacing the drive, I installed Slackware 13.0, and am very pleased that everything "just works" out of the box. Now, I'm on to the nit-picking stuff that doesn't have to change:

In short, does anyone know of a way to change the "blinking question mark folder" icon to something else without having the MacOS installed??

I know when I boot from a snow leopard install DVD, the icon changes to the apple logo, but when booting from my mbr disk with slackware installed, I get the question mark logo, which I'd like to change, appropriately to Tux, or to the Slackware "S".

I've found utilities to do this with OSX, but they require that I have a dual-boot setup with OSX and Linux at the same time. Any clues or pointers would be appreciated.
Thanks
Mac
