Can't tap the touch pad in kernel 2.6

When I'm using kernel 2.4, I can tap the touchpad to click, but when i boot to kernel 2.6, and tap the touchpad their is no clicky. How can I enble kernel 2.6 to click when I tap the touchpad.

Note: I have a Dell Latitude C600

i had no end of hassles with 2.6 and touchpad and sound. I am running 2.4 now with no probs.

And that was with synaptics in /psaux/event whatever didn't run chucked it...

Would that be the same requirement for FC2? This is my only gripe with this distro!

This works for my touchpad on 2.6 kernel. when you boot and see the boot:
prompt type in psmouse.proto=imps. This worked on SuSE 9.1 and knoppix for me.
