Unhappy Can't read anything on my screen after boot (Mandrake 10.1 - Intel 855, Gateway 400)

I'm a newb.

I've just instaled Mandrake 10.1. I'm dual booted with Win Xp, and everything seems to be working not too bad. The system boots up with the splash screen but once it's finished initialization the screen goes blurry and I can't read anything on it. I think that it's my resolution or my display settings. I've changed the resolution and the monitor types, but to no avail.

I have an intel 855 integrated video card, inside a gateway 400VX laptop. The screen according to windows is 1240x768 flat panel. I also have a VGA output which is connected to a 15' 640x480 CRT.

Neither output anything useful on startup. The shutdown screen I can see fine as well, so I don't know why the problem occurs. I've also tried the setup with XORG accel on and off.

Can anyone help?

Probably, given the appropriate information. Try posting your xorg.conf, output of lspci, output of lsmod. This will provide some specific info about your hardware's detection and configuration.

Thanks for reply masonm. I'm not sure I know how to get everything you asked for. I'm guessing that I start linux in text mode and find the xorg file somewhere. The other two I'm guessing are programs that I run, but I'm not sure.

If you could help me with this it would be appreciated.
