Hello,
Maybe some of you ran into this problem too.
Let me begin with the hardware configuration:
AMD Turion 64x2 Tl-60
Nvidia GeForce Go 6150
80Gb 5400 SATA HDD
Philips 8x DVD+/-R/RW w/DL
802.11 a/b/g Wlan (I guess it is a Broadcom)
Ok,
I downloaded SUSE LINUX 10.1-64 bit version and tried to install it.
It finished the instalation but when I rebooted the machine for the first time it froze.
I reinstaled it once again but... it froze again.
I did not try to start it in Safe mode (I think it should work like that). Anyway if I did, how could I get the graphical interface up an running?
I started it now without the graphical interface, I set up the user accounts, internet connection works, no updates available but graphical interface still freezes uppon restart!!!
I downloaded Scientific Linux 4.4- 64 bit and burned it on another 5 CD's. I tried to install that one... but the laptop freezes when I insert the CD and it asks me if I want to check the media.
I need to mention that I do not have any USB devices plugged in.
Under Win XP everything works well, and my laptop is a replacement from HP for my old laptop that kept breaking down on me.
Can any of you help me with some ideas?
Thx,
Octavian
P.S. I am trying to install a dual operating system XP- and whatever Linux works!
Actually after I installed SUSE, GRUB does it's job apparently because I can choose to restart under SUSE but then it freezes.
I have a persario v2350. Sempron 2800+/512/ati x200/80G/broadcom wireless.
Tried openSUSE before but when ever I unplug AC the system freezes. So guess I am have simular problem as you do.
My suggestion(as what I did) is go for fedora core 5. Ever thing works like dream here. Even the X200 openGL and broadcom wireless card problem is recently solved. Only draw back is when I hiberate system it doesnt wake up.(still working on that but it's not a big issue) And I truely appriciate yum as it simplify everything.
I am not saying that I dont like SUSE(I run 10.1 on my desktop and it works like dream too), but sometimes the best way to solve a problem is simply switch to another distro.(as each distro has its own advantages/disadvantages)
Thanks,
I will try Fedora 5 too. I tried Scientific Linux and as I told you, it did now work and I wasn't expecting Fedora to work because they are pretty simmilar, but I will download it right now.
I will post the results.
...
I'll be back!!!
Same problem with Fedora Core 5.
It looks like it finishes to install it and then at first boot, it keeps freezing.
I tried to enter interactive startup to see if this happens in the same point... but the answer is No!
It happesn at random times.
One more thing I want to mention.
I am installing on the end of the HDD meaning that I have a 65Gb Win XP partition and then there are 11 Gb where I had the recovery partition (it came partitioned like that) which now I use to try to install Linux.
hum, I am no pro and never used 64bits versions before. But maybe you can try any 32-bits version see if the problem still exist?(yeah, lots of CDs to burn)
Also side thought, does it freeze when running other OS like windows? or maybe check the log files? or simply put a knoppix live cd in and see if it works well?
Well,
I installed the 32 bit version of SUSE 10.1 and it does not freeze anymore.
Still, it does not work well at all. The keyboard act strange. I type one letter and it appears many times like I would have pressed the key many times.
The sound is working but none of the volume controls are (not the general ones and not even the volume control of "xmms" for instance). At times, when I start a program, the display goes blank and when I move the mouse around for a while the immage comes back.
It sucks to have a new computer fron this point of view or to be like me:
There is a timer check issue with 64 bit processors i had this same issue with my amd 64 athlon mobile chipset. This is a gateway 7525 but its been reported for alot of the 64 bit ones out there. There is a temp fix for kernel 2.6 thats to add a no_timer_check option at boot. If your running 2.4 then your screwed as it 1 of 2 things. 1. works gret 2. works like crap
They are fixing this issue with latter revisions of the 2.6 kernel and it may alredy be fixed im not sure but i do know that suse and some of the other distros usually lag really behind in updateing the kernel. Redhat is a nice exception thats why laptop users have less issues with it.
but if you know what your doing you can easliy update the kernel and as a linux laptop user i would highly recommend figureing out how as it can solve alot of issues.
ive installed linux on 8 laptops now
(ohh the headaches and torment)
esp. on this gateway
Hello again,
I posted the specs in the beginning of the thread.
I never had problems with Windows and I can start Linux on failsafe mode and it works.
I am not sure what the problem is yet. Maybe it is just what "exvor" said or something else.
I did not have time to play with it any more. I don't have too much time to troubleshoot linux distros that don't work on my laptop. I have a lot of work to do on my research and thesis and so I just use Windows for now.
I will work more on it during the winter break.
