can not install debian in laptop
 

i am trying to install Debian in a Fujitsu Siemens AMILO LI 1705, so i have put an iso file in an usb stick. I have configurated the laptop to boot from usb flippy as firt option, usb storage as second, and usb hard disk as third. And it doesn´t work.. I have changed the boot order, and still not working.. Also have tried with lubuntu and ubuntu..and same issue..

this laptop use to had ubuntu years ago, but has windows now. With this i mean that ubuntu should be ok with this laptop..

How did you write that iso to your usb stick? Which iso is that (where is it from?)

it was lubuntu, no debian :S
 

sorry, i was trying to install this iso file: lubuntu-13.04-alternate-i386.iso but also tried with debian before..

I downloaded it from a lubuntu webpage, and then copied from the laptop to the usb stick.

i am quite new into linux plus english is not my mother language, so please, don´t get nervous with my answers. :)

how did you copy it to the usb stick?

just with the right click in the mouse, copied from the downloads folder and pasted it in the usb folder.

that is the problem. Which os (windows, linux, whatever) did you use to copy that file to the stick?

What program did you use? Windows won't natively write to a USB will it?

Ive used Yumi and Unetbootin successfully.

i just copied and pasted it. didn´t use any program, i think.

shall i download yumi and try with it?

you can download debian installer for windows too. otherwise you need a tool like this: http://www.softpedia.com/get/CD-DVD-...O-to-USB.shtml.

The main thing to know is the difference between copying the ISO and burning the ISO.

Copying the iso file, simply copies the whole iso file, intact to a USB/CD. So if you look at the contents of the usb/cd you will see the ISO file.

Burning the ISO generally means that it will be 'unpacked' and burned to the usb/cd, because an ISO is an archive. So you will see lots of files on the USB/cd, and it will write the boot record contained in the iso to it as well to make it bootable.

Think of it like making a peanut butter sandwich.

Copying the iso like you did was just putting the jar of peanut butter between the 2 slices of bread.

Using a program like Unetbootin is like opening the jar and spreading the peanut butter onto the 2 slices of bread.

2 slices of bread = usb stick
peanut butter = linux live iso.

couln´t start with debian from windows, as when i restart the computer and choose to install debian, it says i can not start windows because a file is missing.. :S

That is almost like what I did with Slack0 5.7 on my Compaq Cq57.
Running Puppy inside of Windows 7 like a program file.
I've been running this way for a while.
I went from Slack0 5.6 to 5.7 with no problemo.

This has nothing to do with USB installation as far as I know.
You just download the exe. and run it in Windows.

I never tried this in Debian but Puppy worked for me so kinda lost on the

Anyhows. If you can still boot up your Windows Install. Delete and uninstall that Debian program .exe
and any installed Linux stuff in Windows ADD/REMOVE Programs.

I'd go with non pae .exe since I don't know the specs of your gear you are trying to install Linux to.

Yep. Definitely the non-pae version.

The above .exe is 161MB .exe download that includes everything.
When it asks if you wish to install grub.
Say yes. It will give you a Windows entry 1st on Menu and Puppy 2nd.

It can be uninstalled via add/remove programs in Windows if unhappy with it and your Normal Windows Bootloader is restored with the uninstall process. I know because I have done this a few times already.


By the way

One is for the pae iso .exe and one is for the non-pae iso exe.

Those are md5sum that I use to make sure I do not have a corrupted download.

The thread title and content was misleading everyone.
